When I volunteered to write a blog post on the consumer and custom magazines I admire most, two were easy choices: The New Yorker, and a custom publication published by the warehouse club retailer Costco, The Costco Connection.

The assignment also included reviewing a business magazine, so I turned to The Economist, a publication I used to steal from a globe-trotting former boss and currently pick up at the airport on occasion.
