Digital Publishing Weekly Roundup: Real-World Applications

Real-World Applications In Digital Publishing

With the number of eBooks sold surpassing the number of hard-copy books sold on Amazon.com, there’s no question that the concept of the eReader is working. (No kidding.) But what about other kinds of digital content? Another number that keeps growing and growing is the amount of applications available for a variety of digital devices (iPad, smartphones, iPod, etc.), and even a small setback like the recent troubles with the iPhone 4 won’t stop that. In fact, the newly released Droid X phone shows us that the market for portable digital content is only getting bigger.

So what about these apps? It seems like every other week another magazine is releasing one for their publication. O, The Oprah Magazine will be displaying and selling eBooks through their app, capitalizing on the huge popularity of Oprah’s Book Club. And megabrand Virgin is taking it one step further and launching an entirely new mag, called Maverick, which will only be available as an app. Even corporations like Kraft are releasing applications related to consumer use of their products. The possibilities are endless. If you have something to say or sell or market—and yes, we’ll go ahead and say it—there could (and probably should) be an app for that.
