Americans have turned to phone-based email
Increased usage of mobile smartphones is changing the way people communicate digitally. Depending on their audience, many marketers today may need to place more importance on social networking and mobile communications.
Email usage is on the decline according to a comScore report, especially among teens who tend to use more social sites and mobile messaging. The report states that web-based email use is down 53% in young people ages 12-17, while there was an increase in the 55 and up age demographic.
ComScore attributes the decline in web-based email to the use of phone-based email which, as smartphone use increases, is taking the place of web-based email. According to another comScore report, 63.2 million Americans owned smartphones in the three months prior to December 2010. While RIM is leading the rankings right now, eMarketer predicts that by next year, Android will be the top mobile operating system in the U.S.
