Verging on Convergence

2010 came so fast. It seems like just yesterday we were filling up our Y2K bunkers for the potentially long nightmare sparked by all those crashing computers.

Did I prepare a bunker? No way! I am one who has always had too much faith in technology. In fact, should machines take over the world and enslave mankind, I’ll probably be one of the first, if not the first, to be taken. (I know that being an early adopter has its risks. After all, I begged my parents to buy an Intellivision.)

Luckily, we’re a long way from being directly controlled by machines. We are, however, in an incredibly exciting time for technology, especially with how it allows us to interact with content. Throughout the last decade, we have all talked about convergence, but how cool is it to actually witness convergence?

As New York magazine’s Adam Sternbergh writes, “1999 can be pinpointed as Precisely the Last Year of How Things Used to Be. We listened to music on stereos. We watched TV on TVs. We read books in books and newspapers on newspapers.” Today, that sounds like the stone age.

I’ll boldly say 2010 will be pinpointed as Precisely the Year Real Convergence Began. My wager is not a reaction to just the newly announced Apple iPad or any of the other e-readers, but I’m looking at a whole Google generation growing up with touch screens, mobile apps and living and sharing on the grid. Oh, the many ways we can deliver content to them!

Make no mistake—we are entering a golden age of content, and if you’re still holed up in your bunker, hiding from technology, you’re gonna miss out. Big time.

Thanks Michael for the comment! Indeed, times have changed since then. The Matrix referenced Alice in Wonderland a lot so it would be appropriate to say we are living in a time that is "curiouser and curiouser."

Larry,

I love the quote about 1999 being the "last year." I remember being knocked over by the concept(s) in the Matrix and the idea of the websites being more than what they are/were, the thinnest lap tops I had ever seen, and "reading" about this device called an iPod. My, how times have changed since then.

Larry,
I agree with what you said about how people will miss out if they don't get on the technology bandwagon, but it is also creating great divides between people. For some it's a matter of having the financial resources to buy the latest Apple product and have the resources to learn about new technologies. For all of us, it's important to not let technology be the sole focus of our lives. Facebook is great, but sitting face-to-face with a friend is what really enriches life!
